Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday was followed by some controversy on social media involving Amad and Alejandro Garnacho

Manchester United winger Amad has deleted all of his Instagram posts after receiving a furious backlash to one of his photos. Amad was a part of the United side which beat Chelsea 2-1 on Saturday, but the enjoyment of the win was tempered by a social media furore.

United benefited from an early red card for Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez as they picked up just their second win of the season. Goals from Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro put the home side 2-0 up and a late goal from Trevoh Chalobah wasn’t enough for 10-man Chelsea.

The game meant a swift return to Old Trafford for Alejandro Garnacho, who was an unused substitute for Chelsea. The Argentina international left United under a cloud over the summer, having been placed in the so-called ‘bomb squad’ by Ruben Amorim following a falling out at the end of last season.

Garnacho is therefore not a popular presence at United, despite the club earning £40million for his transfer. So Amad’s decision to post a photo of himself posing with Garnacho’s Chelsea shirt alongside his former team-mate doing the same with his United shirt didn’t go down well.

His post, to his 2.4 million followers, was flooded with a torrent of comments of United fans questioning his decision. “Can you read the room Amad?” was one of the replies. Another added: “Not a good look Amad.” There were also plenty of swear word-filled responses.

The fact that Amad and Garnacho are friends and are both represented by the same agency, Lead3rS, clearly wasn’t an acceptable reason for supporters. And Amad took the nuclear option in response, not just deleting the one post, but all of his on Instagram, as well as all but one of his posts on X.

Despite not getting onto the pitch and his new team losing, Garnacho was targeted by some abusive chants on Saturday. The early dismissal of Sanchez put paid to any chance of Garnacho getting on against his old side.

“The reason why we changed Pedro [Neto] and Estevao [Willian] was because they attack with the five players always, and we defend with the four, and we can defend with the four when we are 11 vs 11, but 11 against them,” Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca explained post-match.

“I think we need to defend on the width, so we decided to go with the back five. This is the reason why. And then the other one, Garna, he was ready to go on.

“But then Wes [Fofana] asked for the change, because he was tired after a long time, so we changed and we decided to go for Tyrique [George], and the idea was to give Garnacho minutes.”
