Manchester United have been chasing Patrick Dorgu for much of the January transfer window and a move for the Leece wing-back is now edging closer as he speaks out

Patrick Dorgu claims a move to Manchester United “is an opportunity for me” as he prepared to board a blame with his transfer edging closer.

Dorgu is expected to join the Premier League from Lecce for an initial €30million (£25.15m) plus €5m (£4.19m) in add-ons. He was been to the bench for Lecce’s clash with Parma in Serie A on Friday night and his move to Old Trafford should be finalised well before Monday’s 11pm transfer deadline.

Lecce president Saverio Sticchi Damiani had made it clear that the club didn’t want to sell, but Dorgu is eager for the clubs to reach an agreement and looks like he will soon get his wish.

He was spotted shortly before he boarded a plane to the UK and was quizzed on his excitement levels, before speaking out briefly which indicated he was confident the move would get done.

The Manchester outfit will now have to go through the formalities as they look to land the first major signing of the Amorim era. A heavy summer of spending has meant that United have had to be smart with their spending, despite the obvious need for new recruits.

The Denmark international will arrive as a specialist left wing-back, a role which Diogo Dalot has had to fill during Amorim’s first two months in charge. First-choice left-back Luke Shaw has been injured while his backup, Tyrell Malacia, has failed to convince his new boss.

United are in need of new recruits and with Amorim playing a 3-4-3 system the wing-back position has become vital and the team currently lack players who can naturally play in that role.

Amorim admitted this week the club were working to bring in new faces – provided the right players were available. He said: “What I can say is that the club wants to improve the team. That is the most important thing. Everybody is doing things, everything, to improve the team. If we can do it or not; sometimes”

Those at Old Trafford had originally had PSG’s Nuno Mendes on their radar, but he was going to prove too expensive with Amorim having to work under a budget. Mendes had played as a wing-back under Amorim when they were both at Sporting Lisbon. Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez was another under consideration but again would not be sold on the cheap by the Cherries.
