Manchester United kick off their pre-season schedule against Leeds United in Stockholm on Saturday afternoon and Ruben Amorim will be hoping Bryan Mbeumo can join the party that travels to the United States soon after.

Brentford appear to have finally accepted United’s third bid, totalling around £71m, for the Cameroon international and he will become the third signing of the summer after Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon.

However speculation continues to spin over the futures of several members of the so-called Carrington “bomb squad” with several big names set to remain at home while they explore options of a move away from United after Amorim made it clear they are not part of his plans.

Here are the big stories from in and around Old Trafford as the new campaign takes a step closer.

Mbeumo agreement

Bryan Mbeumo’s £71m move to Manchester United has moved a step closer after Brentford agreed to sanction the sale of their top goalscorer.

United had failed with two earlier bids for Mbeumo, 25, only for a third offer to be deemed acceptable by Bees chiefs. That will see Brentford receive £65m guaranteed, paid across four instalments, with £6m more to come in add-ons.

Mbeumo’s representatives had already agreed personal terms with the Old Trafford hierarchy, paving the way for a move to be completed in the next couple of days pending the completion of a medical.

The Cameroon international had also had keen interest from Tottenham Hotspur, a move that would have seen him follow the path taken by head coach Thomas Frank last month.

But he will instead be joining up with United.

‘Bomb squad’ latest

Ruben Amorim’s hard line stance over Manchester United’s unwanted players does not have complete approval from the club’s staff. United have placed Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia in the ‘bomb squad’ while they try to sell them – but the decision has caused divisions.

The five players have been told they have no future under Amorim at United and are therefore seeking transfers to other clubs. Rashford, Garnacho, Antony, Sancho and Malacia have been isolated from the first-team squad, forced to train separately in order to draw a line between the two groups.

The Athletic reports that the bomb squad approach is contentious inside the club, with some worried it sends the wrong message. There is also the fact that making it obvious the players are unwanted risks lowering their transfer value, especially as the September 1 transfer deadline approaches.

Garnacho options

Aston Villa are the latest club to signal their interest in Manchester United outcast Alejandro Garnacho. The winger is expected to depart the Red Devils before the end of the transfer window and is not part of Ruben Amorim’s plans.

The Argentina international, who was available for sale in January, was told to find a new club by the Portuguese head coach after Garnacho was publicly critical of the decision to not select him to start in the Europa League final defeat to Tottenham. As a result, Garnacho has not been part of United’s pre-season plans.

Instead the winger has been told he can report to Carrington for training from 5pm, after the first team have completed their training. Thus far, United have not been able to facilitate a transfer for any of the players they want to sell.
