Barcelona signed Dani Olmo in the summer but could only register him until the New Year and the player’s agent is considering a move to the Premier League if the Spaniard cannot play for the La Liga giants
Manchester United are among several Premier League clubs keeping tabs on Dani Olmo – who could leave Barcelona for free next month.
The Catalans signed the midfielder in the summer following a stellar Euro 2024 for the Spaniard. He moved back to Barcelona, where he began his career, from RB Leipzig. However, following his move, Olmo could only be registered on a temporary arrangement until the end of the calendar year due to La Liga’s ongoing financial constraints on Barcelona.
It means the Spanish international can leave as a free agent if the country’s football chiefs continue to block his registration for the latter part of the season. The commercial court of Barcelona has rejected their latest appeal for the registration of Olmo.
They now have time until December 31 to register Olmo and they will present a new lawsuit against La Liga in the Lower Court on December 30, reports Mundo Deportivo. The uncertainty though means those around the 26-year-old have had to make contingency plans and a move to England is a possibility.
United, Manchester City and Arsenal have all taken a keen interest in whether the player could be available for nothing next month. His agent Andy Bara, 42, owner of Niagara Sports Company, flew to Manchester by private jet ahead of City’s game with Everton and was due to be attending the game, reports the Daily Mail.
Bara played a role in City’s £77million deal to land Josko Gvardiol from Leipzig in 2023. Olmo’s priority has always been to stay with Barcelona, his boyhood club, but the drawn out process could force his hand.
United are in major need of reinforcements with the team still in the bottom half. Ruben Amorim has arrived but, after a summer of investment, there are a lack of funds available for him to pursue big name players.
City too are likely to take an interest with Pep Guardiola’s champion outfit seemingly in decline. Their form has fallen off a cliff over the past two months and their manager admitted, whilst they usually avoid the January window, they may change their approach.
Barcelona held a meeting on Monday where it is understood a contract for the sale of VIP seats was put on the table. The Spanish giants hope that the package would be sold for about £166m (€200m) as they look to raise funds to register Olmo and Victor.
