Simon Kubalik died in HMP Doncaster after he was sentenced to six years behind bars for assaulting a Good Samaritan who had agreed to give him a lift in his car

A man who punched a Good Samaritan and robbed him has been found dead in prison.

Simon Kubalik, 20, was found dead in Category B HMP Doncaster where he was serving a six-year prison sentence. His body was found inside the jail on January 16, according to the Prison and Probation Ombudsman, which investigates deaths in prison. Kubalik, from Beeston, in Leeds, attacked a man after he approached the victim who had been sat in his car on Harehills Lane, in Harehills. Kubalik, who was with a woman at the time, asked the man for a lift to St Alban Road about 1 miles away.

After the victim agreed, Kubalik punched him repeatedly. He then went on to steal the man’s wallet and phone, Mirror affiliate YorkshireLive reports. The victim was left with facial fractures and needed several operations following the attack. Kubalik was charged after he was identified through CCTV footage.

Kubalik had been jailed in November last year following a trial at Leeds Crown Court. The Prison and Probation Ombudsman is now carrying an investigation into the circumstances behind Kubalik’s death. The Mirror has contacted the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) for comment.

According to the MOJ, there were 343 deaths in prison custody in the 12 months to December 2024. This represented a 10 per cent increase on the 311 recorded in the previous 12 months. Of these, 89 deaths were “self-inflicted,” a seven per cent decrease on the 96 cases recorded in the 12 months prior. Prisons have become more violent in the UK with the rate of assaults and serious assaults both increasing to 342 per 1,000 inmates and 38 per 1,000 prisoners, respectively.
