Manchester United have changed Patrick Dorgu’s name on their official website and team-sheets after a request by the Danish international’s family. The left-back joined United in January as one of the club’s first signings under Ruben Amorim and has already made a fast impression, starting six times and putting in some solid displays.

The 20-year-old arrived for around £30million from Serie A side Lecce, where he had emerged as one of the division’s top talents this season and United were quick to snap him up to solve their left-back woes.

But while most fans have become accustomed to calling him Dorgu, the player himself has now asked United to add his middle name Chinazaekpere wherever he is mentioned in club media and on matchdays.

Dorgu’s family originate from Nigeria and Chinazaekpere roughly translates to “God answers prayers” and they wanted the name to be included out of respect for his heritage and religion.

A United article provided more information on Dorgu’s family and background while officially addressing his full name for the first time. It said: “Patrick Chinazaekpere Dorgu has been a Manchester United player for only a matter of weeks but the early signs have been encouraging.

“One of four children, Patrick – who has a Christian middle name – is surrounded by a family who is religious but also embedded in sport, with two brothers who are footballers and a sister who plays handball.

“Admittedly a Chelsea fan as a boy whose childhood idol was Eden Hazard, Patrick grew up in the Husum neighbourhood of Copenhagen to Nigerian parents who have always supported and encouraged their children’s education.”

Dorgu earned plaudits for his positive display for United in their 4-1 win over Real Sociedad in the Europa League last-16 this month – redeeming himself after being shown a red card against Ipswich last month.

Dorgu has revealed how Amorim’s style of play convinced him to join United

He recently discussed why he chose to link up with the Red Devils ahead of other clubs and how Amorim managed to persuade him that United was a good fit for his career.

“I obviously saw Ruben in Sporting and could already see the ideas he had,” Dorgu said earlier this month. “A really attacking system and I would like to get in the box and score goals.

“He (Amorim)’s talking about, obviously, the connection with the other players, the midfielders, the 10s, it’s the connections, a lot of deep runs and movement. It was not nice to get the red card but it is football and I just need to learn from this and improve my game. I am settling in Manchester, the training is good.”

Over the international break, Dorgu played in both of Denmark’s Nations League quarter-final ties against Portugal, providing one assist against Cristiano Ronaldo’s side in the second leg, despite his team’s 5-2 loss.
