Marcus Rashford’s Man Utd exile has continued, with former Premier League striker Chris Sutton claiming he could be left to “rot” at the club after Ruben Amorim’s latest remarks.
Marcus Rashford could be left to “rot” at Manchester United after boss Ruben Amorim’s brutal putdown of the exiled forward.
Rashford has not featured in United’s last 12 games since being left out of the United squad by Amorim for United’s 2-1 derby win at Manchester City on December 15.
Amorim underlined his hardline stance on Rashford after United’s 1-0 win at Fulham on Sunday, stating he would rather put 63-year-old goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital on the bench than a player who does not pull his weight.
Against that backdrop, and with few clubs willing to move for Rashford because of his £325,000-a-week salary, the 27-year-old faces the prospect of spending the rest of the season in isolation at United.
Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton reckons Amorim’s latest comments about Rashford could ultimately backfire and damage United’s chances of offloading him before the transfer window closes next Monday.
“I think it’s a really interesting one,” said Sutton. ‘I think there will be a fair few Premier League sides thinking about the financial aspect and whether it’s worth the risk. The other stuff, there’s a debate about Amorim being right to call him out over the weekend, if INEOS would like that.
“If you’re trying to get him out on loan or whatever, if you’re telling everyone he’s a bad egg, that may not go down well with other clubs.
“But if that’s the way Amorim feels, and everyone knows how talented Rashford is, and yet he’s not showing the right attitude and application. I think Amorim is well entitled to come out and say that. And why do managers call players out publicly? Because it’s a last resort. They have no other option.
“I think it’s that case with Marcus Rashford. If he can’t get away he’s going to rot at Manchester United, that’s unfortunate. I don’t know what Rashford is thinking, for the life of me.
“All you have to do is drive to the training ground and work hard. You do what every other player and staff member does. You apply yourself, that’s what the club pays a vast amount of money for. He may argue that he is putting everything in.”
Sutton, speaking to Gambling Zone, said Rashford’s representatives need to do what is best for the England international and help him rediscover the focus and form that will allow him to get his career back on track.
“For the Manchester United manager to call him out as he has, why would Amorim have an agenda against him when he’s desperate for results and he knows from his past what a brilliant player he can be?” said Sutton.
“I do see this Amorim’s way, and it’s up to Rashford, and maybe people around him, to actually tell him what he should be doing, that he should be knuckling down. It’s down to him, nobody else.”
