Manchester United appear ready to cash in on Marcus Rashford and former Premier League star Danny Murphy has urged the forward to jump ship while staying in England

Former England midfielder Danny Murphy has told Marcus Rashford a move to Arsenal could suit him better than current club Manchester United.

Rashford has spent his entre career at Old Trafford, racking up more than 400 appearances, but has endured a difficult 2024. He was left out of England’s Euros squad, and United are reportedly ready to let him leave for the right price as they aim to raise funds for head coach Ruben Amorim to add to his squad.

United are thought to want around £40million for the 27-year-old, who is one of many wide forward options in the unbalanced squad Amorim inherited from Erik ten Hag. Fellow wide man Antony has also been linked with an exit, with the likes of Alejandro Garnacho and Amad Diallo getting more minutes at the start of Amorim’s tenure.

Arsenal also have a fair few options in wide roles, with one of them – Bukayo Saka – scoring twice in a 3-0 Champions League win against Monaco on Wednesday night. Even so, Murphy has urged Rashford to consider a North London switch if the opportunity arises.

“Playing in a team that’s so settled and so confident and competent, there is a case that his end product would get much better, because Arsenal are really dominant in games” Murphy said on talkSPORT. “There would be some people who would take Rashford over [Gabriel] Martinelli.”

Like Rashford, Martinelli enjoyed the best goalscoring season of his career in 2022-23 before seeing his numbers tail off. He has scored just 12 times since the start of last season, with Rashford bagging 15 during the same period.

“The ability he’s got and physical attributes he has, he’s capable of more,” Murphy added when discussing Rashford, arguing “perception” has harmed the Mancunian. “But he’s been at a club where the managers and managerial team has not been stable, the team’s not been great.”

Rashford has travelled to the Czech Republic with the rest of Amorim’s squad, with United facing Viktoria Plzen in the Europa League on Thursday. The forward’s one European goal this term came in a 3-3 draw with Porto in October, and the Premier League side can boost their chances of an automatic spot in the round of 16 with a win.

Amorim was asked about January transfer business ahead of the game in Plzen, suggesting things aren’t completely black and white. “I’m really focused on my players and understanding my players, I think that was one of the problems of this club. We have to focus on what we have, the Academy and also to have the clear profile when you get the players,” he said.

“It is a lot of details you have to manage. Every detail counts. You have to be very clear in the profiles, arrange all the processes and then go to that phase of buying and selling.

“We have, like Ty [Malacia], international players that are good players and we need our time to teach our idea, then we will see. This is a massive club, we have to improve as a team.

“We have to arrange a lot of things in our club before just in buying and selling players. Let’s focus on improving our players, improving our Academy and then we will see.”
