Money-saving expert Martin Lewis has urged all Brits forking out more than £10 on a common household bill to search for a better deal, after thousands admitted to paying £30 or more per month
As ‘Awful April’ sees several major household bills increase, Brits have been warned to stop ‘overpaying’ for one specific monthly payment. Council tax, the TV Licence, energy bills, and even road tax will be spiking this month – in a series of blows to cash-strapped Brits.
Amid these financially challenging times, Martin Lewis has urged all mobile phone users to make sure they’re getting the best deal possible. In a TikTok video from 2022, the money-guru said: “If you haven’t sorted and changed your mobile phone deal, you are likely paying way too much. My big question would be are you paying over £10 a month? If so, why?”
According to the Express, Martin conducted an X (formerly Twitter) poll which saw 30 per cent of 12,000 voters admit they pay around £30 per month for their phone bill. “Now, if part of that is repaying a handset, fair enough. If it’s because you roam a lot, fair enough,” he added. “Maybe if you [have] got poor credit and have to be on pre-pay – but that shouldn’t be too much more expensive. “

Martin went on to suggest many Brits will benefit from switching to a different SIM card – which you can do without changing your number. Most SIM-only deals will include unlimited texts and calls, which means you’ll likely only need to work out how much mobile data you need.
The average user consumes around 4GB of data per month, but this could be higher or lower depending on your circumstances. For example, if you stream videos while commuting to work every day, you might want to find a contract with a higher level of data – but those who work from home and have their device connected to WiFi the whole time will be able to find a cheaper SIM.
Martin Lewis’ Money Saving Expert website has compiled a list of the best current SIMS on offer. Most of these may be from brands you haven’t heard of, but tend to you networks from bigger providers such as Vodafone.
