Some Sky users are being treated to major update which adds more features and fixes an issue when watching sport on TV.

Sky users who have already ditched their satellite dishes and switched to streaming instead are in for a feature-packed few weeks. Sky has just confirmed that it’s pushing out a blockbuster upgrade to its Sky Stream and Sky Glass devices which both use the web to beam content to the big screen rather than a receiver stuck to the outside of homes.

There are some major changes coming in this Entertainment OS release and one of the best upgrades will please anyone who loves watching sporting action.

Sky says it’s finally fixing the annoying delay faced by those streaming content. It’s long been an issue for Glass and Stream users who are always around 30 seconds behind the live action.

That’s now being sorted with this irritating latency lag being reduced by over 20 seconds – that’s almost the same as those watching via satellite or a standard aerial. At first, the upgrade will only be available when watching action on Sky Sports Main event but more channels are set to follow in the future.

“Sky Sports Main Event viewers will be able to watch sports in Low Latency over the coming months, before being rolled out to other Sky Sports channels this year,” Sky confirmed to Mirror Online.

That’s clearly good news for football, rugby and F1 fans but there’s plenty more coming in this release including improved personalisation.

A bunch of new characters have been added to make profiles look more fun and when selecting a family member from the settings they’ll see more content tailored especially for them. The changes also include new personalised movie and TV genre rails which pop up on the home screen and make it easier to binge on content that matches previous viewing habits.

There’s also the option to add favourite actors to Playlists with movies they have appeared in then showing up in the menu. Useful Rotten Tomatoes scores have also been added offering a very quick way to see if the movie about to be watched is a triumph or a dud.

Other changes coming to Sky Glass and Stream include more voice controls for an easy way to fast forward and rewind plus users can now search for music content just by speaking into their remote. For example, just say “Fred Again on Amazon Music” and tracks will instantly begin playing.

All Ultra HD on demand content, including Sky Nature shows and blockbuster films, will have the option for subtitles by the end of the summer – a feature already available on HD. Coming soon, Audio Description will also be available on video-on-demand content.

This latest upgrade isn’t just about TV with gamers also getting a boost on Sky Glass.

Sky is adding an Auto Game Mode to its TVs which lowers the latency when using consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

It’s a big update that will start arriving on devices soon. Sky says that these improvements join over 500 updates made to Entertainment OS since the launch of Sky Glass.
