Gregg Wallace details how to cook rice perfectly

MasterChef host Gregg Wallace has revealed his foolproof recipe that guarantees fluffy rice every single time – and the common mistake that makes the popular dish soggy.

While the two-minute microwave rice bags are undeniably convenient, and require less washing up, nothing quite compares to perfectly-cooked boiled rice, which costs just a fraction of the price. However, the unpredictable grains can often gather in claggy clumps, or boil over into a frothy foam, if not cooked correctly.

Fortunately, TV chef Gregg has shared his unbeatable rice formula which can’t go wrong once you have “mastered” the method. Taking to TikTok, the food expert said: “Rice is really cheap to just buy and really expensive to buy in microwave bags. This is the way to cook it, and once you’ve mastered it it’s fabulous.

“Just remember this, it’s double the amount of water as it is to rice.” He then talked through the simple preparation steps, which can be found below.

  • In a saucepan, add two cups of rice, before pouring in the four cups of water. Using a wooden spoon, gently stir the contents of the pan. Gregg highlighted a common rice mistake that is often made, adding: “You stir now and not when it’s cooking, as this will make it all gluggy.”

  • Place the pan on the heat and bring it up to the boil. Then, turn the heat down to the lowest setting so the contents simmer and place the pan lid on slightly wonky.

  • After 15-minutes you will have “beautifully cooked rice”. Once served into a bowl, stir the rice with a fork to “fluff it all up”

Gregg concluded: “You don’t need microwave bags anymore, I can’t see a problem with that.” The helpful video has amassed nearly 94K likes, and impressed followers flocked to the comments to share their reaction.

One user gushed: “First time in my 37 years I have made perfect rice! Thanks for this, I feel posh.” While another penned: “Been doing this for years. Finally some advice on how to cook rice the right way.”

A third wrote: “Exactly how I cook rice and exactly how I taught my daughter and son. Perfect every time.” “I tried this and was finally able to make fluffy rice for the first time ever,” shared another

Meanwhile, others slammed the chef for not washing the rice first, as one user voiced: “Wash the starch out first until clear water,” to which Gregg replied: “Yeah you can do that.”

A second echoed: “Err! wash rice, then cover to the depth of finger knuckle above rice (use boiling water) add salt bring back to boil then simmer with lid on!” Another suggested using a rice cooker, confessing it’s the “best gadget” they had bought.

Gregg responded to this recommendation with: “Brilliant, not everyone has one and I don’t want people to think they have to buy anything extra to make rice but I’ve heard they are great!”
