McDonald’s has shaken things up

McDonald’s fans have voiced their disappointment after noticing a rule change when ordering. Many diners at the place with the golden arches now use the app to place orders, utilise special offers, check in at restaurants, and to amass reward points.

For every penny spent at McDonald’s, app users can earn one MyMcDonald’s Rewards point. Once you reach a certain number of points, you can exchange these for rewards, with these ranging from free snacks, mains, and drinks, or you can choose for McDonald’s to make a donation to charity on your behalf instead.

For example, 1,500 points could get you a medium soft drink, regular coffee, mini McFlurry, or small fries, among other items. The more points you amass, the bigger the items become, and until recently 4000 points could get you a Big Mac.

However, thanks to a new rule change, this is no longer the case. One disgruntled McDonald’s diner took to Reddit, where they wrote: “They literally made double cheeseburger for 4000 points whereas Big Mac is now 5500 points and they removed Double Quarter Pounder. They’re literally taking the pistachio.”

Others on the online platform have been quick to respond, as one user said: “This post just made me fully commit to stopping McDonald’s all together. Its a shame. I’ve been a customer since I was almost 3 years old.”

A second added: “Those cheeky b******s. The double quarter was my go to for using reward points” and a third wrote: ” I loved the double quarter pounder one. Sad it’s gone.” However, one Reddit user hit back, saying: “Imagine getting something for free and still complaining.”

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We’re always listening to our customers, and we regularly review our rewards programme to ensure we continue to provide the value and variety that our customers expect from us. We’re really excited to have recently introduced a number of fan favourites now available for redemption, including our Cheeseburger and iconic Sausage & Egg McMuffin, providing even more moments of joy in our customers day.

“At the same time, we’ve moved some products into higher point tiers, reflecting the nature of rising food prices.”
