The Duchess of Sussex has come under fire in some quarters for her ‘unrelatable’ Netflix series – but she can change the narrative with one simple step, according to a PR expert
The trailer for Meghan Markle’s new Netflix series has received very mixed reactions, but she could soon see everyone onboard.
The Duchess of Sussex has had to postpone the release of With Love, Meghan out of concern for the ferocious fires sweeping through Southern California. The series was set to kick off on Jan 15, but has been pushed back to March 4.
A teaser for the show shows Meghan performing tasks such as choosing fresh flowers, harvesting honey, kneading homemade bread, and working in the kitchen. The streaming giant described the series in a press release as an “inspiring series” that “reimagines the genre of lifestyle programming, blending practical how-to’s and candid conversation with friends, new and old”.
But many are sceptical about the show based on how unrelatable and “out-of-touch” it seems in today’s society.
According to one PR expert, there is one thing that Meghan can do to turn her critics around. Edward Coram James, CEO of Go Up , said that the Duchess needs to flip the narrative of being “out-of-touch” and instead use it to her advantage.
He told Express.co.uk: “I think she’s stuck between two identities: the everywoman and the duchess. She needs to pick a lane.
“If Meghan wants to be aspirational, she should embrace her ex-royal identity and lean into the glamour, the intrigue, and the exclusivity. Stop pretending to be relatable and instead own the fact that she has a life most people can’t imagine. Own the out-of-touch narrative but flip it: ‘I’ve lived in rarefied spaces, and I want to use that access to make a change.'”
James continued: “Meghan could also take a page from the playbook of celebrities like Taylor Swift or even Diana in her later years — they leaned into their flaws, embraced their missteps, and spoke directly to the public without over-polishing their image. Meghan’s audience might love her more if she openly confronted controversies like royal family tensions without playing it so safe or controlled.”
It comes after an insider told OK! Magazine that Meghan feels this show will be “the perfect revenge for all her doubters and haters”, adding: “She is so confident it’s going to do well and she will get the accolades she deserves for it, which will finally shut some people up. She can’t wait.”
They continued: “She has always been confident in her own abilities and while her confidence took a knock when she was in the Royal Family , she is riding high again and she’s so proud of this show. People tend to underestimate her, but Meghan knows what the audience wants and she is giving them that with this show.
“And nobody can criticise her for cashing in on her royal connections because she doesn’t really mention them. She is just determined to show that she can make it on her own without Harry and her titles. Some people think she’s only famous because of Harry, but that’s not true and she’s going back to her roots. People always open up to her because she listens and cares. She knows the audience will warm to her if they give the show a chance.”
