The Duchess of Sussex has put a modern twist on the British staple – and her choice of hot drink reflects her health-conscious lifestyle, according to a tea aficionado.
Meghan Markle’s choice of tea reflects her personality, according to an expert who has lifted the lid of the tea preferences of the royal family. Arthur Gautier of Nio Teas, a premium brand that specialises in Japanese green teas, told Luxurious magazine: “Each royal has their go-to favourite. Tea has played a huge role in the royal family ever since Queen Victoria popularised it in the 19th century.”
When it comes to Prince Harry’s wife, she likes to bring a refreshing twist to the British staple. Meghan drinks a modern mint tea – she was previously seen sipping on the herbal infusion during a visit to Birkenhead – and it reflects her modern tastes, according to Arthur. “It’s caffeine-free, soothing, and perhaps a nod to her health-conscious lifestyle,” he said.
Meghan is certainly an advocate of a wholesome diet. She always starts her day with a nutritious breakfast, according to authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand in their book Finding Freedom. “Her morning ritual started with a cup of hot water and a slice of lemon, followed by her favourite breakfast of steel-cut oats (usually made with almond or soy milk) with bananas and agave syrup for sweetness,” they revealed.
The royal is also said to enjoy an omelette with cheese, fresh herbs and a side of toast. Meanwhile in a 2015 interview with Best Health , Meghan herself revealed: “I try to eat vegan during the week and then have a little bit more flexibility with what I dig into on the weekends. But at the same time, it’s all about balance. Because I work out the way I do, I don’t ever want to feel deprived. I feel that the second you do that is when you start to binge on things. It’s not a diet; it’s lifestyle eating.”
And she has said she typically tries to avoid caffeine in the afternoons, instead opting for a green juice to get an energy boost. Speaking to Today, she explained: “It’s easy to fall into the trap of rushing for a coffee when you hit that 4pm slump. But if I blend some apple, kale, spinach, lemon, and ginger in my Vitamix in the morning and bring it to work, I always find that sipping on that is a much better boost than a cup of espresso.”
When it comes to a weekly highlight, Sunday dinner is one of Meghan’s favourite meals. “I am a big fan of Sunday suppers. Whether we’re eating lamb tagine, pot roast or a hearty soup, the idea of gathering for a hearty meal with friends and family on a Sunday makes me feel comforted,” she told Today .
“I enjoy making slow-cooked food on Sundays, like Filipino-style chicken adobo. It’s so easy — combine garlic, soy (or Bragg Liquid Aminos), vinegar, maybe some lemon and let the chicken swim in that sauce until it falls off the bone in a Crock-Pot.”
