As the weather is getting warmer, beauty lovers may start to reach for the fake tan with more skin starting to be on show. And although a fresh layer of bronzy tan always makes us feel brighter, it can be a real nightmare when it comes to bedding.

Fake tan lovers will be all too familiar waking up in the morning after a hot and sticky night to find their bedsheets covered in a orange outline – but there are some easy ways to get your bedsheets looking brand new again with some simple kitchen cupboard items you will most likely already have.

As we move into spring, fake tan sales increase by 25% according to Google Trend Data. The main culprit for staining sheets is often the added “guide colour” or colourant present in many self-tanning products. This colourant is designed to help you see where you’ve applied the ten and ensures even coverage – so no streaky marks – but is what can stain your clothes and bedding. Martin Seeley at MattressNextDay has shared some of his top tips and tricks to get your bedding looking brand new again.

Baking Soda and White Vinegar

Baking soda and vinegar are powerful combinations for breaking down stains. Shake baking soda directly onto the area and simply pour some white vinegar over it. The foaming action helps lift the tan from the fabric, but you need to let the solution sit for 15 minutes and then wash as usual in the washing machine.

Lemon Juice and Salt

Lemon juice is a natural bleaching agent, while salt is a gentle abrasion to lift stains so by mixing fresh lemon juice with a teaspoon of salt, gently rub it onto the stain. If you want an extra cleaning boost, pop it in some direct sunlight and then wash as normal.

Dishwashing Liquid and Hydrogen Peroxide

A combination of dish soap and hydrogen peroxide (an antiseptic) will effectively breaks down stubborn stains. Mix equal parts of both, apply to the affected area, and let it sit for 30 minutes. Rinse with cold water and place in the washing machine.

Milk Soak

While this one may sound a little unusual, soaking your sheets in milk can help easily dissolve fake tan stains. Pour enough milk into a bowl to submerge the stained area and let it sit for at least an hour before washing as usual. The lactic acid helps break down the tan residue.

Bicarbonate of Soda Paste

Create a paste using bicarbonate of soda and a little water. Apply it to the stain and let it sit for 30 minutes before scrubbing gently and washing the sheets. This method is especially effective for older stains that have already been set.
