Beloved TV doctor Michael Mosley died aged 67 after going missing during a walk on the Greek island of Symi in June last year; his body was found days later, with heatstroke suspected as the cause
Dr. Clare Bailey, the widow of beloved TV doctor, has opened heartbreaking regret one year after his tragic death on a Greek island.
Michael Mosley vanished in June last year during a walk on the island of Symi. After four agonising days of desperate searching, his body was discovered near Agia Marina Beach.
He had died at the age of 67, likely due to a heatstroke or a “non-identified pathological cause,” an inquest found.
Now, in an emotional interview, Dr. Bailey has revealed the regret she feels after throwing away one of his belongings. She said, “The one thing I really regret was his, was his… what are those shoes called? He wore leather shoes with a kind of high…” Hiking boots?
“Not quite a hiking boot, but he used to wear the same boots years and years and years. And I threw those away because I kind of thought, you know, I’m on a mission. And I rather regret that,” Bailey told The Sunday Times.

She went on to share just how her loss has affected her, explaining that even now, a year later, she’s still struggling to come to terms with the reality of Michael’s sudden death, admitting, “I don’t think one can make sense of it. The shock is so profound, I don’t know how to.”
She also opened up about one of the most difficult and surreal moments she faced in the aftermath – the journey home without him. “And there are moments of it that are horrific where you have to pick up your bags and go on the plane. I was absolutely terrified of getting on the plane.”
The family returned to Greece in June to mark the anniversary of Michael’s death, though they chose not to stay on the island of Symi.
Clare explained, “We all felt that was just going to be too much, because we had climbed and searched and scratched our way through so much of the strange parts of the island, so it was very, very fraught. But we did go back on the day, to the lovely, beautiful monastery at the far end of Symi. I’ve not grown up religious at all, but I find it comforting to sit on a pew.”
Despite the heartbreak, Clare has stayed focused on honouring Michael’s legacy. One thing that’s kept her going is finishing the book she had started writing before his passing — titled Eating Together.
Dr. Mosley left behind Clare and their four children.
He was famous for fronting hit BBC health shows like Trust Me, I’m a Doctor and The Truth About Exercise, and was an advocate of intermittent fasting and low-carbohydrate diets, writing books promoting the ketogenic diet.
