Michael Owen has been mocked after naming his Premier League Team of the Season so far with his goalkeeper selection proving divisive as supporters have their say on social media

Michael Owen has been mocked after naming Jordan Pickford as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League so far when naming his Team of the Season.

The campaign is only at its halfway stage but several individuals have stood out and, despite Everton still being in the midst of a relegation fight, Owen has named their No.1 as the best shot stopper in England’s top flight.

Ten of the 11 players selected by the former Liverpool striker are playing for teams that are sat in the top half. Pickford is the only exception but has kept seven clean sheets this term – the second most in the Premier League. Only Nottingham Forest No.1 Matz Sels has more with eight.

Despite that Owen has been mocked on social media after posting his team. One said: “Have you had your eyes open for this season?” Another supporter questioned: “Pickford over Raya, what is your reason behind it, cause Raya is better in every department”. Whilst another added: “How did Pickford make it? lol”.

Pickford has produced some big moments, especially over the past month. Everton were able to hold Chelsea and Arsenal to goalless draws whilst the England No 1 saved a penalty from Erling Haaland at Manchester City to secure the Toffees a point at the Etihad.

Owen picked several mid-season awards and named Arne Slot as the best manager with Mohamed Salah the best player. Nottingham Forest were cited as his surprise of the season with Nuno Espirito Santo’s side sat in the top four.

His moment of the season thus far was Amad Diallo’s winner in the Manchester derby. His late goal completed a sensational comeback and silenced the Etihad as Manchester United stole all three points with the Ivorian a standout for the visitors that day.

Owen has come up with some bold opinions, but whilst he was initially mocked, some of those are beginning to look good at the halfway stage of the season. Despite Manchester City being champions he claimed they would struggle to make the top four.

The player turned pundit replied to a tweet which quoted him predicting City’s decline and simply added an upside down smiley face emoji.
