Liverpool star Mo Salah has got one over on Manchester United by becoming ‘bigger’ than the Reds’ bitter rivals – on Instagram. The Egyptian forward has a stunning record against the Red Devils, notching 16 goals and a further six assists in 17 career appearances.

And with his most recent outing against them at Anfield in January potentially being his final one with his expiring contract, Salah has inflicted one final blow on his club’s bitter rivals.

This time, he’s got one on United on social media, rather than the pitch. The 32-year-old has surpassed United’s Instagram followers, with 64.5million, while United only have 64.3m. Unsurprisingly, gleeful Liverpool fans have been quick to rub salt in United’s wounds.

One Liverpool fan wrote: “No way Salah is bigger than Man United,” while another said: “Owns Manchester United on the pitch and off it”. United fans have also offered their takes, with some pointing out the fact that he has also surpassed Liverpool.

“He has more followers than Liverpool,” one fan said, with another replying: “Which means he has more followers than his club,” alongside a screenshot showing Liverpool having 46.6m followers on Instagram.

Salah has previously explained his stunning record against United but suggested he does not go all out to find the net against the Red Devils. Speaking earlier this season, he said: “I just go to the game, try to focus on the game and win the game. I know what it means to the fans and the city, so I’m always trying to help the team and score goals. If we score goals we have a better chance to win the game so I’m always focusing on the game, trying to help the team to win the game.”

Losing Salah would certainly be a big blow for Liverpool. But Reds boss Arne Slot is still keen to keep the forward at Anfield for the foreseeable future.

“We want him to extend, of course,” said Slot on Salah, whose contract is set to expire in the summer. “That is clear but I am not surprised that Saudi wants him… I would not be surprised if other countries wanted him as well.

“He is old and wise enough and has done so many smart things in his career he will make the right decision for himself and hopefully for us as well. I would be surprised if there was anyone around the world saying, ‘We don’t want Mo Salah’. He has been doing so well for so many years that everyone probably wants him.

“He has done so well without my advice for a long time so he can probably keep doing what is best for his career even without my advice.”
