Eintracht Frankfurt forward Omar Marmoush, who has been given the seal of approval from international team-mate Mohamed Salah, is being targeted by both Liverpool and Manchester United

Manchester United are looking to steal a march on Liverpool in the race for Omar Marmoush, a man Mohamed Salah labelled “incredible”.

The Eintracht Frankfurt forward has been on fire this season, scoring 11 goals in as many Bundesliga games. His impressive tally has propelled Frankfurt into an unexpected title challenge. After finishing sixth last season, the team now sit second in the league, hot on the heels of leaders Bayern Munich.

Naturally, Marmoush’s stellar form has drawn admiring looks from many of Europe’s top clubs. Liverpool are thought to be favourites to land the Egyptian, particularly with his international team-mate Salah reportedly going to bat for him.

But according to Sky Sports Germany, United are monitoring Marmoush’s situation closely and are mulling over a January approach for the 25-year-old. Frankfurt reportedly want around £50million, though that figure is likely to climb if multiple clubs express interest.

The Red Devils could dip their toes into the transfer market in January to give new manager Ruben Amorim the chance to mould the squad to his liking, particularly with his penchant for a three-at-the-back system. Personnel problems were evident from the start against Ipswich on Sunday, and it’s understood that wing-backs, central midfielders and forwards are on the club’s transfer wish-list.

Marmoush is capable of playing across the front three, which would give Amorim plenty of depth and versatility going forward. As things stand, United don’t have a particularly reliable goalscorer – with Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee all going through dry spells – and he could be just what the doctor ordered in terms of attacking impetus.

Liverpool, meanwhile, could accelerate their interest in Marmoush if Salah’s contract situation deteriorates any further. On Sunday, the 32-year-old dropped a bombshell by telling reporters he hadn’t been offered a new deal and that he was “more out than in” following the Reds’ 3-2 win over Southampton.

Salah’s Anfield future has been up in the air for some time. His contract is set to expire at the end of the season, which means Liverpool will lose him free unless they tie him down to a new deal in the coming months. He’s reportedly earning £350,000 per week, and the club is said to be hesitant to offer him a multi-year contract at the same or similar salary.

Liverpool’s interest in Marmoush isn’t contingent on Salah’s future, but the club may feel under pressure to secure his services if it becomes clear that he isn’t going to stay beyond the summer. According to German outlet BILD, Reds boss Arne Slot is impressed with Marmoush’s versatility and thinks the player would be an excellent addition to his squad, with or without Salah – who sang Marmoush’s praises earlier this month.

“Omar Marmoush, incredibly talented and currently a key player for his club and the national team,” he told WinWin. “I hope he can stay away from comparisons [to me] because they will keep putting him under constant pressure. People need to stop comparing him to me, saying he’s ‘the new Salah’ and that he’ll do what I did or even better, this doesn’t help him.

“You can’t compare him to a player who has achieved so much over the years while he’s just starting out. Let him live his own experience and enjoy it. He’s doing something different, in his own unique way.”

Marmoush started out at Egyptian side Wadi Degla before sealing a career-igniting move to Wolfsburg in 2017. He was later loaned to St Pauli and Stuttgart before being sold to Frankfurt in 2023.

In his debut season at the Waldstadion, he scored 17 goals across all competitions and is now just three goals shy of matching that tally in the current campaign. He’s also been an Egypt regular since 2021, earning 35 caps and scoring six goals.
