An ill-tempered Donald Trump lashed out at a news host and accused her of a ‘dishonest interview’ after being questioned about the impact of his tariffs on supermarket prices
New footage shows the moment Donald Trump accused a news host of being “dishonest” in an ill-tempered interview.
In a wide-ranging interview last night, the president was put on the spot by NBC News’ Kristen Walker about soaring prices on supermarket shelves in the US following his disastrous tariffs policy – and responded by suggesting little girls should own less plastic dolls imported from China. Trump said: “I don’t think that a beautiful baby girl needs — that’s 11 years old — needs to have 30 dolls. I think they can have three dolls or four dolls, because what we were doing with China was just unbelievable. We had a trade deficit of hundreds of billions of dollars with China.”
Asked whether this meant Americans should expect to see “empty store shelves”, he said: “No. No, I’m not saying that. I’m just saying they don’t need to have 30 dolls. They can have three. They don’t need to have 250 pencils. They can have five.”
But after Kristen pointed out that prices were “already going up on some popular items”, an irritated and somewhat tired-looking Trump interjected: “Whoa, whoa. This is such a dishonest interview already.”
He then launched into a rant appearing to blame predecessor Joe Biden, saying: “Prices are down on groceries. Prices are down for oil. Prices are down for all energy. Prices are down at tremendous numbers for gasoline.
“And let me tell you, when you have — the big thing, what he did, he spent like a stupid person, which he was. But he spent like a very stupid person. And that was bad for inflation. But what really killed us with inflation was the price of energy.”
Later in the interview, Trump denied he was planning on running for a third term – despite repeatedly teasing the idea over recent months.
He claimed that “so many people want me to do it” but described it as “not something I’m looking to do”, going on to say: “I’m looking to have four great years and turn it over to somebody, ideally a great Republican, a great Republican to carry it forward.”
Despite presidents being limited to only two terms in the US constitution, 78-year-old Trump as recently as last week said he was “not joking” about seeking a third presidential term.
A ‘Trump 2028’ hat has even appeared on his online merchandise store, with supporters asked to cough up $50 (£37) for the red baseball cap.
In another part of last night’s interview, Donald Trump also suggested he could lower tariffs on China at an undetermined point in the future, saying: “At some point, I’m going to lower them because otherwise, you could never do business with them”.
