Energy bills can take a real toll on your wallet, but now one money-saving expert has shared one simple change you can make to slash the cost – and it takes just seconds

A money-saving expert has spoken out about a simple change you can make that could help lower your electricity bill, and it costs nothing.

Energy bills can really take a toll on our wallets, and with the energy price cap set to rise next month, many people are worried about how much they are going to have to pay this winter.

Luckily, there could be an easy way to ease the financial pressure, and it costs nothing to do. Taking to TikTok, user The Sterling Man (@thesterlingman) shared how adjusting your boiler settings could reduce how much you’re paying. “This simple trick could reduce your gas bill,” he said.

“According to Octopus Energy, most people have the temperature settings on their boiler set too high. Octopus Energy recommend setting your hot water temperature down to 55.

“For the radiator temperature, Valen [Energy] recommends that this can go down to 60. However, Octopus Energy recommends this can go down as low as 50.”

According to the Energy Saving Trust, turning down the flow temperature of your boiler can improve its efficiency by around 4-5%. This, in turn, can save you money, but how much depends on a number of factors.

“How much you’ll save will depend on several factors including: What your boiler was set to before. Whether your home was too warm before. How much you’re prepared to experiment with your boiler’s flow temperature,” the website said.

However, experts at the Trust warned you should be careful when changing the flow temperature of your boiler.

Risks can include not being able to heat up certain rooms or even your whole house sufficiently, which, if this becomes a chronic issue, could be dangerous for elderly residents.

“Turning the boiler thermostat below 65 degrees on a conventional boiler (with a hot water cylinder) can increase the risk of legionella bacteria growing in the cylinder, which is dangerous,” the Energy Saving Trust continued.

They also urged you to make sure you didn’t accidentally change the wrong settings on your boiler.
