The warm months and brighter days have arrived. Although it’s a task that should technically be done every season, the months of March and April are key to ensuring the grass grows back healthily.
March marks the start of the gardening season, and it’s the perfect time to ensure that our outdoor spaces are looking their best for the warmer months ahead. Even though it might not be a favourite task for many, there’s no better feeling than having a tidy garden.
As gardeners begin prepping for the spring and summer season, the beloved BBC presenter and gardening expert Monty Don has issued an important warning to anyone with overgrown weeds lingering in their outdoor spaces. Looking ahead to the month of April, he shared his advice: “The important thing is to get on top of things. So cut the grass, weed as much as possible, get perennial plants in the ground, finish mulching, sow some seeds – but in a manageable, enjoyable way.”
Either way it’s important to dig up any weeds as they compete with other plants for resources like water and nutrients – and starting now paves the way for an easier time gardening in the summer. It’s also a crucial task to be done sooner rather than later as weeds can spread across gardens, making it harder to stop them as the weather heats up.

When is the best time to cut grass?
Monty Don has advised gardeners to mow their lawns and cut unnecessary grass this month, recommending only a “light trim.” He explained that by keeping a bit of length on the grass, it will ensure that it grows back healthily and survives the sunnier months ahead. A light trim encourages healthy regrowth and maintains the lawn’s good look as temperatures rise.
He continued: “Keep it simple. There is still time to spare. And if there are jobs that you ‘ought’ to have done much earlier there are two sensible approaches.” Monty concluded: “Either do them right now, a bit later than you should, or leave them till next Winter. But having made the decision, act!”
What happens if you don’t cut the grass?
Failing to mow the lawn during these crucial months can result in a few consequences, including more work piling up. March and April are particularly important for grass growth, and neglecting to mow during this time could negatively affect the overall appearance of your outdoor space.
While it may seem harmless to delay mowing until later in the spring, it’s best to do the job as soon as possible. Regular mowing helps the grass maintain a healthier appearance and encourages it to grow back beautifully next time. Consistent mowing reduces the risk of diseases that can be caused by long, untidy grass.
Therefore, it’s essential to mow the lawn regularly in March and April to ensure that our garden spaces look neat and tidy. By doing so, gardeners can enjoy a vibrant and healthy lawn throughout the spring and summer months. Regular maintenance now will prevent larger issues from arising later and will create a more enjoyable outdoor space.
