The upmarket supermarket and retailer is currently undertaking its store rotation programme and has recently shared a list of places where it would like to open new sites

M&S has shared where it would like to open new food stores as part of its store rotation plan.

The upmarket supermarket and retailer is currently undertaking its store rotation programme. First announced in October 2022, the plan sees the chain reduce its “full line” stores from 247 to 180 by 2028 and open 104 more Simply Food shops. In an update published on its website in October, M&S shared its 2024 property brochure.

This publication – which can be found under the “Our Properties” section of the site – details the retailer’s requirements for new food stores and shares a list of places across the UK where it would like to open one. It’s very important to note that these places are not guaranteed to get a new M&S store and are only areas in which the retailer would like to put one. There are lots of other factors which can influence these decisions.

According to the document, for stores in London, M&S is looking for locations with a size of around 25,000 sqft and dedicated or nearby car parking. M&S says both new builds or conversions and freehold or leasehold sites are being considered. It also notes that the site must have access to the public transport network.

For places outside of London, M&S is looking for two-acre edge-of-town locations with a property of 21,500 sqft. Ideally, the site would be able to feature a car parking plot which could hold 150 vehicles. These sites would ideally be close to major roads with easy-access for drivers. Again, both freehold and leasehold properties will be considered alongside existing retail units.

M&S says there are 97 sites in North London in which it would consider opening stores, as well as 73 in the South. The document lists 15 places in Scotland and 37 in the North East. 26 are listed for the North West and North Wales, 34 for the Midlands and East Anglia, 49 for the South East, and 26 for the South West and South Wales.
