A mum has shared a ‘genius’ hack that will help speed up the drying process for both clothes and bed sheets indoors – and no tumble dryer is needed

Laundry can take more than 24 hours to dry indoors without assistance, and it’s during this lengthy drying process that damp, musty smells can develop. However, there is a method households can use to speed up the drying process that won’t be as costly on their energy bills as using a tumble dryer.

During the hours when households have their heating turned on, money-saving mum Gemma Bird, who also appears on ITV’s Lorraine Save Squad, has shared a tip on TikTok on how they can utilise it to their advantage when drying clothes and bed sheets. @moneymumofficial captioned her video: “Dry your clothes faster!

“Tumble dryers are not cheap. Did you know that on average a 2500W tumble dryer costs about 85p to use for an hour? If you use this often, it soon mounts up.”

Instead, Gemma suggested covering your airer full of clothes with a bed sheet and draping it over a radiator. She added in the caption: “Use a bed sheet and put it near the radiator. It dries the clothes in half the time.”

In the video, Gemma demonstrated the hack. She began by adding her clothes to the airer and positioning it near one of her radiators, reports the Express.

She then draped a bed sheet over the airer and tucked it into the radiator before leaving the clothes and bed sheet to soak up the trapped heat. Fellow TikTok users shared their thoughts on this tip in the comments section.

Social media users are sharing their clever hacks for drying clothes indoors and their endorsements for utilizing a dehumidifier are quite convincing. @sandrahil294 said: “I had towels and jumpers on my airer with a bed sheet and it was all dried in two hours.”

Echoing that sentiment, @natbaps88 added: “Done it for years – even better when you put a heater fan. It did three loads of washing in about an hour and a half.”

To tackle the added humidity, they suggest positioning a dehumidifier close to the airer, a move that can fend off unwanted mould.

While the dehumidifier is marked as optional, it’s clear from the commentary that many find it an effective aid. @sandyoshea36 said: “I do this with a dehumidifier. Great results.” While @lilpookie6 said: “Best buy ever is a dehumidifier with laundry setting, especially for drying woollens in winter.”
