We all have our own routines when it comes to dinner times, but one mum has shared her ‘strange’ routine to ensure her hungry daughter gets fed straight after school

A mum has opened up about her unusual dinner time routine with her daughter which has been dubbed as “strange” online.

Most of us will remember finishing a long day of school and being bursting to know what is for tea. Some parents bring a snack after school for their children to please them until teatime, while others have tea prepared before they arrive home so they can enjoy it straight away.

Many wait until the whole family can sit down around the table; it is a good way to catch up at the end of the day. After school activities and clubs can also affect dinner times, so different routines work for different families.

But, one mum named Nicole, said her daughter “can’t wait” until she gets home for tea, so she prepares her a meal to eat in the car. Despite school being just 10 minutes from their home, the parent said she worries “she won’t eat dinner” if she gives her a snack after school, and she is too hungry to not get fed straight away.

Nicole took to her TikTok page recently @nicole.alder1, where she boasts over 34,000 followers, and shared a video of her making a dinner to take on the school run. The mum served up rice, a tin of sweetcorn and six chicken dippers.

Nicole said: “It’s that time again when we make a full school dinner on the school run, then she eats that in the car, then she can snack until her heart is content.” In another video, Nicole added: “She going to eat it in the car on her way home from school, because that’s what she likes doing.”

After being flooded with comments and questions, Nicole explained that the reason she does this is because her daughter is “so hungry” when comes out of school. She added: “So if I give her dinner then she can snack all evening and I don’t worry that she won’t eat dinner it works well.”

But some cannot understand the mum’s decision. “Each to their own…but I find this strange.” Another said: “Ridiculous make her wait till she’s home…who is the adult?”

“Is she unable to wait the short car ride until you’re home?,” questioned another. One other agreed and said: “How long is the car ride home? Why can’t you take a sandwich and then have dinner later?”

Another suggested: “Just take her a peace of fruit for the car journey home then dinner when she’s home then snacks. This is very odd I just say.”

But others rushed to agree with the mum and support her. One shared: “My daughter is always so hungry when she finishes and begging for snacks this kind of makes sense but I’d leave it cooked at home warmed ready.”

“To be fair they eat early at school,” noted another. One other wrote: “We really should normalise just letting people live their life however they choose. We’re all just winging it the best way we can.”

Another dubbed the trick as “genius”, and added: “My daughter is starving at 3pm but then one snack and all of a sudden she isn’t hungry for dinner until around 7pm.”

Another noticing how sweet the mum’s routine is, added: “Eating in the car with her mum is gonna be such a comforting memory for her when she’s an adult who cares if she needs to wait till she gets home. She’s a kid.”
