A woman who let her mother-in-law name her daughter has been left baffled as her partner’s mum has now taken ‘offence’ to one detail regarding the little one’s name

Choosing one baby name to stick with for the rest of your child’s life is a big commitment.

While the process of choosing a baby name is easy for some parents, others spend the months leading up to their child’s birth pondering different options and trying to come up with the perfect moniker. There are countless names to choose from, and it can be difficult to narrow down your selection – especially if nothing appeals to you, or if you just have far too many favourites to pick just one.

One woman who recently welcomed a daughter actually had the naming issue taken out of her hands, as her mother-in-law came up with the name. She said that when she was pregnant, her boyfriend’s mum suggested the name Cecily, and both parents-to-be “immediately fell in love with it” so decided to go with it once their child was born.

However, now the little girl is just over two months old, and there are already some problems with the name. The mum said she has been using cute nicknames for her daughter, like Essie and Lily, and when she used them around her mother-in-law recently, she was shocked to find that the woman was “furious”.

In a post on Reddit, she said: “When she heard me call my daughter Lily, I could have sworn she made a face, but I brushed it off. I used the nicknames Essie and Lily a few more times throughout the visit before my boyfriend and I finally left.

“Yesterday, I woke up to a text (sent at 2am) from my boyfriend’s mum where she basically told me that she’s offended by my use of nicknames for MY baby. She said that since my daughter was named Cecily (her recommendation), she felt that I was attacking her name choice by using ‘made-up random names’ for my baby.”

The woman also accused the mum of “trying to cut her out of her grandbaby’s life” by renaming her and “severing the ties” she has to her granddaughter. The mum responded to the text to say that she still loves the name Cecily and isn’t changing her daughter’s name but is simply using cute nicknames.

But now her boyfriend has got involved, accusing her of ignoring his mum and refusing to talk about the name drama. He urged her to just apologise to his mum so that the argument can end, and admitted his mum was “kind of right” about the nicknames – leaving his partner in tears.

She added: “It’s my baby, and it’s my right to LOVINGLY call her cute little nicknames. I know that my boyfriend’s mom is being unreasonable. I seriously don’t know what to say to her without completely kissing her a** and losing all self-respect.”

In the comments, people urged the mum not to back down, as she’s within her rights to call her own daughter whatever she wants. They also said her boyfriend should be on the same page as her, instead of defending his mum.

One person said: “If she had stipulations attached to her name suggestions, she should have clearly stated them before offering them. She’s being absolutely ridiculous – this is your baby. If you wanna call her Lord Farquaad you can!” Another added: “Her feelings are her problem. They have nothing to do with you. Her not shutting the f*** up is on her. It’s your baby and you can call her what you want.”
