The Peri-Peri chicken chain has announced its new Extra Saucy Wings, which are made with its PERI-Flamer secret sauce, that has previously only been available to those who asked for it

Nando’s has put a secret item on its menu for the first time ever – and fans will be delighted.

The Peri-Peri chicken chain has announced its new Extra Saucy Wings, which are made with its PERI-Flamer secret sauce, that has previously only been available to those who knew to ask for it. The sauce is a mix of PERI-Tamer and Hot and is described as “sweet, smoky and spicy”.

Nando’s fans will be able to order three, five or ten flame-grilled chicken wings covered in PERI-Flamer and drizzled with creamy yoghurt dressing. The launch of Extra Saucy Wings follows the return of Creamy Salad Dressing in February after it was taken off the menu in 2021.

Other recently announced new menu items include the Garlic Churrasco Burger which uses garlic bread as its bun. The burger contains two flame-grilled chicken thighs, pickled red onions, mixed salad leaves and all-new Smoky Churrasco PERinaise, served in a garlic bread burger bun.

Nando’s has also unveiled a spicy take on macaroni cheese. The new Peri-Mac and Cheese is made up of cheesy macaroni with a crunchy, garlic Peri-Peri crumb topping. It comes after Nando’s said in November last year this it will step up its restaurant opening plans after “strong customer demand” saw its sales surpass pre-pandemic levels.

The Peri-Peri chain said it will open 14 new restaurants over the current financial year, including sites that have already opened in Edinburgh, Newcastle, Doncaster, Taplow, Bognor Regis, Watford, Northampton and Belfast.

In the financial year to February 2024, the hospitality chain opened 17 restaurants, with 11 of these in the UK and Ireland. It came as the group reported revenues grew by 7.5% to £1.37 billion for the year to February 25, compared with the previous year. Nando’s said it made £86.6million of capital investment over the year, as it opened more stores and refurbished a number of restaurants.

Nando’s reduced its pre-tax losses to £50.1million for the year, from a £86.2million loss a year earlier, and the group reported an operating profit of £59.8million for the year. Rob Papps, group chief executive of Nando’s, said: “The 2024 financial year saw Nando’s deliver a good sales performance and a return to pre-pandemic levels of operating profit driven by robust consumer demand for our flame-grilled Peri-Peri chicken supported by our strong brand and customer proposition.“

But he added: “Despite the improved sales performance, ongoing cost pressure with energy, labour and food remained very challenging.”
