Kobbie Mainoo’s Manchester United future has been uncertain since the summer, and the England international is struggling to earn a place in Ruben Amorim’s starting lineup

Napoli are confident they can sign Kobbie Mainoo in January, but Manchester United may only agree to a deal on one condition. The Italian giants are confident the Red Devils are amenable to a move, but only if any loan offering does not include an option to buy.

Antonio Conte’s side are set to reignite their interest in Mainoo after mulling over a transfer. The Serie A champions engaged in talks to sign the England international in the summer before switching up their transfer plans when Romelu Lukaku got injured.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli are confident they can agree a deal with United as they plot a second attempt to land the 20-year-old. Mainoo also saw interest from Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton in the last transfer window.

The midfielder has struggled to break into Ruben Amorim’s plans so far this season and has yet to start a Premier League match, with Bruno Fernandes figuring in a role in the centre of the pitch. Mainoo’s only full 90 minutes came in defeat to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup.

The talented academy product will be keen to earn more playing time ahead of next summer’s World Cup. The United ace went to the Euros in 2024 to cap off a fantastic breakout season.

Amorim said last month that Mainoo will get opportunities, but wants to see his young charge improve. “Like a lot of guys, he wants to play more,” Amorim said.

“I believe a lot in Kobbie but some of you think that Kobbie Mainoo is already done. I think he can do so much better. He can improve in a lot.

“And sometimes I think for some guys it’s [the level he’s playing at now] enough. For him, it’s not enough. Maybe it’s not fair but I think I’m helping Kobbie Mainoo and that’s it.

“He will have opportunities like the other guys. If I feel during the week that he’s the best player to play, he’s going to play and I proved that already to every player here.

“I believe a lot in him. I have the same thing [opinion] that you have and that is a top, top player, but he can be so much better, so I’m focused on that.”

Napoli have already seen some success after targeting players from Manchester United. Scott McTominay helped the team to the Serie A title as he earned player of the year honours following his move.

And Rasmus Hojlund has taken to form quickly after making his return to Italy. The Denmark star has netted domestically and in the Champions League, with his international coach suggesting United may have been the problem.
