A huge fire appears to have broken out in Nassau, the capital of Bahamas – with images on social media showing thick clouds of smoke rising into the air
A huge fire appears to have broken out in the capital of Bahamas.
Images on social media have shown thick clouds of smoke rising into the air from miles away. It is not yet confirmed what has caused the blaze. One Twitter/X user posted: “Something is on fire in Nassau”, while another said: “What’s happening in Nassau, Bahamas?”.
A local media site, Out News Bahamas claims the blaze has been caused at a scrap yard in the city. It tweeted: “Fire Services are presently on the scene of a fire at a vehicle scrap yard in the area of the city waste disposal/dump site.” However, at present these reports are unconfirmed.
In December last year horrified cruise passengers captured the moment a £10million luxury superyacht crashed into the side of a giant liner in the Bahamas. The luxury yacht Aurora appeared to have lost control and crashed into the gigantic Royal Caribbean liner Allure of the Seas while the cruise ship was docked in Nassau Harbour.
Shocked passengers on board the 225,000-ton cruise liner filmed as the 121-foot superyacht veered towards the enormous vessel before slamming into its hull with an almighty crunch.
The superyacht scraped up the side of the vast cruise liner, scraping along its hull as a crew member frantically tries to stop the impact. As the Aurora, a Nordhavn 120 explorer yacht built in 2014, went along the side of the ship the top of its mast struck one of the lifeboats on the larger vessel shattering its radar dome leaving debris strewn around the yacht’s deck.
Dayanni Bhagwandin was able to capture the yacht smash on camera, he described the moment of impact, saying: “When it got to about a third of the way past the cruise ship as it was entering the port, it suddenly swung right and just kept coming closer.” He told 7 News Miami: “I grabbed my phone, and then I heard the impact—it was so loud.”
And last September, a cargo fire broke out on one of the containers onboard a 730-foot barge being towed by tug Patriarch when it was 86 miles northeast of Nassau in the Bahamas. “There is no threat to the general population or the 11 crew members aboard the Patriarch at this time. The Patriarch is en route to Nassau, Bahamas to be closer to commercial salvage and fire fighting capabilities,” USCG said.
