The mass closures will begin in September and continue through to February 2026, leaving angry customers worried about how and where they will be able to do their banking
NatWest has announced plans to close 55 more branches across the UK this year, including 52 traditional high street locations and three mobile banking vans, blaming a rise in customers using online services.
The closures, which include NatWest branches in Bridgwater, Chippenham, Cirencester, Trowbridge and other locations across England and Wales, are scheduled to take place next month – between September and October 2025. Local customers have expressed frustration with the closures, with some residents voicing concerns about the impact on vulnerable customers who rely on in-person banking services to manage their money.
But NatWest has defended the closures, stating that over 80 per cent of active current account holders now use digital services and over 97 per cent of retail accounts are opened online. It comes as banks and building societies have closed 6,161 branches since January 2015 at a rate of around 53 each month, according to Which?.

Lloyds Banking Group, comprising Lloyds Bank, Halifax, and Bank of Scotland, has shut down 1,216 sites. Barclays is the individual bank that has reduced its network the most, with 1,227 branch closures.
A NatWest spokesperson said: “Our customers are using digital banking more than ever before – over 80% of our active current account holders now use our digital services and over 97% of retail accounts with us are now opened online.
“We are also significantly investing in refreshing our network – we expect to invest in excess of £20m in our network across the UK in 2025 to improve customer service, enhance the look and feel of our branches, and reduce the environmental impact of our buildings, as well as continuing to invest in shared solutions like the Post Office and Banking Hubs.
“Like any business, we strive to meet our customers’ changing needs and expectations and we’ve been responding to the industry wide shift towards digital services by investing to broaden what customers can do themselves and to offer them greater personalisation.”
