Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveals net migration dropped from 860,000 in the year ending December 2023 to 431,000 a year later.

Net migration has halved in a year, data released this morning shows.

The figure – measuring the difference between those arriving in the UK and those leaving – dropped from 860,000 in the year ending December 2023 to 431,000 a year later.

The Office for National Statistics figures will be a boost for Keir Starmer, who has vowed to drive the number down. It hit a peak of 906,000 under the Tories.

Last week a long-awaited white paper revealed a string of measures, including scrapping social care visas. There are also new English language and qualification requirments in order to qualify for a skilled worker visa.

Before the Tories came into government in 2010, then-leader David Cameron vowed to ensure net migration was in the “tens of thousands”.
