There’s a new city of love in town and it’s a great alternative to Paris for a romantic break away with your partner – with prices starting from just £139 per person

With spring just around the corner, what is more romantic than a city break with your loved one?

If the clichéd city of love, Paris, doesn’t tickle your fancy, consider an alternative that’s giving Paris a run for its money – the Serbian capital, Belgrade. As per recent data from global travel booking platform, Omio, searches for hotels in Belgrade have skyrocketed by 203 per cent in the past month, while ‘hotels in Paris’ have only seen a modest 12 per cent rise.

If you or your partner are history enthusiasts, then Belgrade is a treasure trove waiting to be explored, boasting attractions like the Belgrade Fortress and the National Museum. The Belgrade Fortress, a must-visit for history buffs, was the heart and oldest part of Belgrade’s urban area.

For centuries, the city’s populace was confined within the fortress walls, making it the true cradle of the city. Established in the 3rd century BC and later seized by the Romans, it now stands as a stunning monument and military museum where you can delve into the city’s past.

If a laid-back stroll through Belgrade is more your speed, make sure to stop by Knez Mihailova – the city’s main pedestrian and shopping zone, legally protected as one of the city’s oldest and most precious landmarks, reports the Express.

Regarded as one of the most picturesque pedestrian zones in South East Europe, the street is always bustling with locals and tourists alike. It offers a blend of contemporary shops and stalls peddling souvenirs and mementos, alongside appetising restaurants and bars—ideal for a pit stop after a shopping spree.

Belgrade also boasts the advantage of being more affordable than many European cities, making it an ideal choice for budget-conscious travellers. A pint of beer will only cost you around £2, while a three-course meal for two comes to just £35, according to Numbeo, the world’s largest cost of living database.

If you’re tempted by a spontaneous trip to this stunning capital city, Skyscanner currently has direct flights from the UK to Belgrade departing on the 13th and returning on the 16th of February, with prices starting from a mere £139 return.
