It could need treatment, the NHS warns
The NHS has warned people who find that their clothes no longer fit to see their GP as it could be a sign of a back condition. According to the health service, it could be scoliosis.
This occurs when the spine twists and curves to the side and it can improve with treatment. “It’s not usually a sign of anything serious and treatment is not always needed if it’s mild”, they caution.
What’s the symptoms of scoliosis?
It can affect people of any age, from babies to adults, but most often starts in children aged 10 to 15.
Signs of scoliosis include:
- a visibly curved spine
- leaning to 1 side
- uneven shoulders
- 1 shoulder or hip sticking out
- the ribs sticking out on 1 side
- clothes not fitting well
The NHS warns: “Some people with scoliosis may also have back pain. This is usually more common in adults with the condition.”
Should I see a GP?
Consult a GP if you suspect that you or your child may have scoliosis. While it’s unlikely to be a serious issue, it’s best to have it assessed.
If the GP suspects scoliosis, they will refer you to a specialist. If diagnosed, the specialist will discuss treatment options with you.
An X-ray of your back will be performed to determine the severity of the curve, the NHS explains. They will also to you if treatment for scoliosis is needed depending on your age, how severe the curve is and whether it’s likely to get worse with time.
Typically, this condition doesn’t cause severe pain or lead to other health issues, and it usually remains stable once you’ve finished growing. However, if it worsens, consult a GP.
You may find it useful to contact a support group, such as Scoliosis Support & Research.
