The Eurovision Song Contest officially kicked off on Tuesday for the first semi-finals, but fans were divided over Olly Alexander’s debut performance for the UK

Olly Alexander’s fans have spotted the moment his Eurovision performance started to go downhill.

The 33-year-old hitmaker suffered backlash after his performance at Tuesday’s Eurovision Song Contest semi-final in Malmö, with some viewers left unimpressed by his efforts. Olly took to the stage representing the UK with his song Dizzy and disgruntled fans were quick to moan about the It’s A Sin star’s efforts, prompting eagle-eyed fans to point out that Olly was actually hit by a major malfunction, with his microphone breaking.

Taking to social media, one X, formerly Twitter, user posted a clip of Olly’s performance and added: “Anyone else notice Olly’s mic pack fell out. Only noticed on the rewatch. As a gym instructor I know how off putting that is. An amazing performance just got elevated even higher! Go Olly!”

In response, someone else tweeted: “Basically had to perform the entire second half one handed. Also in the section where he crawled forward he was holding mic pack and mic in same hand. Must have put him off big time.”

“Olly Alexander delivered a ridiculously assured and confident performance which remains true to him as an artist. He did incredibly well to deal with his mic pack falling off. Bravo,” another person added, while a fourth said, “Olly, @alexander_olly – you [were] PHENOMENAL tonight. I know there was [that] annoying mic pack thing tonight, and could see it on your face that you weren’t happy. Get your head back in the zone. You are an incredible talent. We’re so proud. Break a leg, darling.”

Although Olly was thrilled to unveil Dizzy, the first single he has written solo, his moment under the spotlight received a varied response from viewers who quickly voiced their opinions online.

One viewer expressed disappointment, saying on X: “Had high hopes for the UK @Eurovision this year with Olly Alexander but it sounded a little ropey at the semi-final just now.” Another commented sharply: “Shockingly poor singing there from Olly Alexander.”

Another critique came from a third viewer who tweeted: “#EURO2024 sorry but I don’t think much of #OllyAlexander Dizzy UK entry. Set and production poor.” Another echoed: “Let’s be honest. Olly Alexander just doesn’t have the voice. #Eurovision2024 .”

Despite the negative reviews, Olly’s supportive fans came out in their dozens to back the singer after the harsh criticism. One fan gushed on X: “I just love Olly Alexander… GREAT staging… #ESC2024,” while another praised, “Olly’s performance was SO professional. It was like watching a music video. Best staging of the year #unitedkingdom.”

Another viewer changed their tune after seeing the live show, admitting: “Ok, when I first heard Olly Alexander’s #Eurovision song for the UK, I didn’t like it, but now that I’m seeing the staging, I like it a lot better.”

Olly previously told the Mirror he is unable to think about anything other than the competition on Saturday . He said: “I go to bed thinking of Eurovision, I dream about Eurovision, I wake up thinking about Eurovision. It’s just constantly, constantly in my head. I feel like I’ve gone through everything that could possibly go wrong, every eventual possibility, it’s happened in my head already in one way or another. So I don’t know any more. I’m just overwhelmed.”
