Olly Alexander, 33, was hit with backlash over his performance of Dizzy at the semi-finals of the Eurovision Song Contest
Olly Alexander was hit with more ‘disappointing news’ after he was slammed over his performance at the semi-finals of Eurovision.
The singer, 33, is the UK’s entry for the Eurovision Song Contest 2024 and took to the stage in the Swedish city of Gothenburg for the event’s semi-finals, days on from the former Years and Years singer justifying his reasoning for rejecting pleas for him to respect the BDS boycott of Eurovision and withdraw from the competition.
Fans were less than impressed with his performance as they took aim at his vocals as he belted out a rendition of Dizzy – the song he hopes will bring in some points during Saturday night’s final. Viewers at home accused him of being “off-key” and “out of tune” by, with Olly later appearing on Lorraine to reveal he had a wardrobe malfunction on live TV.
However, Olly’s disappointment hasn’t ended as the latest betting odds show people expect him to score zero points in the final. Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It looks like it’ll be yet another disappointing Eurovision year for the UK, with Olly Alexander now just 12/1 for a nil point night.”
The odds for the UK to win Eurovision is 66/1 while the odds for the UK to finish last is 5/1. Speaking about which contestant has the highest chance of winning, Alex continued: “Ireland’s chances of winning have taken a slight hit, with Croatia already beginning to pull away as clear favourites to win in Sweden.”
His Eurovision journey has been difficult in recent months due to the controversy over his participation in the competition. Israel’s inclusion in the yearly contest has received widespread criticism amid Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruthless bombing of Palestine – which massacred over 34,000 people, 70% of them women and children.
During his semi-final performance of Dizzy, fans noticed his struggle as they accused him of being ‘off-key’ while many rushed to his defence and said his microphone broke. Taking to social media, one X user shared a clip of Olly’s performance and added: “Anyone else notice Olly’s mic pack fell out. Only noticed on the rewatch. As a gym instructor I know how off putting that is. An amazing performance just got elevated even higher! Go Olly!”
In response, another user tweeted: “Basically had to perform the entire second half one handed. Also in the section where he crawled forward he was holding mic pack and mic in same hand. Must have put him off big time.”
