Brainteasers come in all shapes and sizes, and this puzzle is proving to be so hard that apparently, only those with a high IQ can solve it. Although it will force your brain to think outside the box, by challenging yourself to solve the problem you will be improving your mind’s ability to focus on a task, as well as your memory and overall cognitive ability.
One test question is proving really difficult for people who struggle to read between the lines, but also those who might consider themselves good at it. The seemingly simple riddle asks people to answer a question – but it’s not as easy as it seems.
The problem has left people stumped, with most not being able to decide between two different answers. So can you work it out?
The riddle was shared on social media reads: “There’s a woman in a boat on a lake wearing a coat. If you want to know her name, it’s in the riddle I just wrote. What is the woman’s name.”
The challenge was first posted on Threads and has racked up more than 1800 comments from people trying to solve it.
Many got confused and argued about what name was correct. If you’re stuck, here are some helpful tips. Firstly, keep in mind that the name you’re looking for isn’t your everyday moniker. One top tip is to replace words with your name to see if it helps you to make sense.
Now, at first glance, one might assume the answer is in the beginning part of the riddle “there’s a woman in a boat on a lake wearing a coat” as it states in the second part that the answer is in “the riddle I just wrote”. However, other people were convinced that the name is revealed later on in the puzzle and is pointed out thanks to its punctuation.
You’ll notice in the photo of the riddle, it states at the end: “What is the woman’s name.” There is a full stop after name meaning that technically ‘What’ is the woman’s name. However, other people argued that the puzzle hinted at the name being entirely different.
One person replied: “It’s ‘what’.” However someone replied: “This makes sense but the riddle says the answer is in the riddle. ‘What’ isn’t.” Another user added: “This is poorly written. It should be ‘What’, but as it is written ‘the riddle I just wrote,’ that can’t be the answer.”
However, others pointed out the name could be Theresa, with the letters ‘there’s a’ spelling out the moniker. Meanwhile others said the name could simply be ‘There’.
