A new study of 2,000 adults has found that Brits chug through 12 million litres of coffee each morning to help them wake up and last through the work commute

Brits are downing over 12 million litres of coffee each morning to jumpstart their day and survive the work commute, a new study of 2,000 adults reveals. That’s a whopping 53 million mugs of coffee each morning.

For 53% of coffee lovers, functioning without their morning caffeine hit is nearly unthinkable, while 47% wouldn’t dream of stepping out without a cup in hand.

Londoners are the most serious about their morning brews, with 52% say that coffee provides them with the energy to tackle the day ahead, and their first cup typically poured at 7:14 am.

The study was commissioned by Nespresso to mark its new pod collaboration with Oatly. Free pods are being distributed to commuters this week at major stations like London Victoria and Waterloo.

BBC The Traitors stars Linda Rands and Minah Shannon were spotted offering a helping hand this morning at London’s Victoria Station.

Gen Z is leading the charge in adopting oat milk, with more than double the number pairing it with their coffee compared to Boomers (21% vs. 10%).

But the survey also found that 41% of coffee drinkers enjoy experimenting with flavours and milk alternatives, with 30% regularly swapping traditional milk many for variety or perceived health benefits.

During the chillier months, the warming comfort of coffee leads to even greater dependence, with 64% yearning for its cosy embrace.

Interestingly, by the age of 27, coffee becomes an indispensable part of most people’s routine, with 43% claiming it energises them, and 37% using it to enhance focus.

Commuters will have a chance to take home some pods at Waterloo Station on February 14th and Manchester Piccadilly Station on February 17th, between 7am and 12pm.

Anna Lundstrom, CEO of Nespresso UK&I, noted the UK’s coffee culture is constantly evolving, with oat-based favourites like Oat Lattes and Flat Whites becoming increasingly popular in coffee shops.

“More than half of UK coffee shop visitors now choose oat-based coffees, with favourites like Oat Lattes, Cappuccinos, and Flat Whites growing in popularity year after year.”
