A small European town on the border of another European country, features long stretches of coastline, vibrant buildings and ‘a crown of hills’ to explore and has even been compared to Venice

A small European town features seven kilometres of coastline and a ‘crown of hills’.

Muggia, located in Trieste, Italy, sits on the border of Slovenia and is often compared to Venice for its lively coloured streets. The destination is known for its vibrant culture and history. It is both coastal and offers ‘a crown of hills’ that are both Italian and Istrian and surround the town.

The historic center boasts most of the town’s tourist attractions, including the Gothic-style cathedral and small port. Piazza Marconi sits at the heart of the town, and features both the town hall and the cathedral. Visitors can enjoy a scenic stroll, and stop off in one of the square’s many bars, cafes or restaurants.

The history of the town continues with the castle. Whilst it is a private residence, the dramatic building dates back to 1374 and can be reached via the streets off of the town centre. Due to the castle’s affiliation with the Consortium for the Protection of the Historic Castles of Friuli Venezia Giulia, it can only be visited by reservation.

Part of the charm of Muggia is getting lost in the town’s small pathways that weave through the historical centre, to Muggia’s residential corners that feature colourful houses and flowered balconies.

Those who are interested in architecture should head to the Church of St. John and Saint Paul, which dates back to the 13th century. This stunning church features a Gothic façade, and upon a closer look, visitors will see intricate carvings and sculptures. Once on the inside, there are more amazing sights, including frescoes and an ornate altar.

Often compared to Venice, it is also worth venturing to the town’s harbour, where boats bob up and down set against the colourful backdrop of Muggia’s homes. There are also numerous cafes on the waterfront. Tourists can also take in the sights of the town along a coastal walk which winds its way along Muggia’s rugged coastline. Along the walk, there are also opportunities to dip into the Adriatic Sea via little steps that lead into the water.

The town is also home to Beethoven’s museum — located inside the house of the Carrino family, it houses at least 9,000 objects. Muggia has plenty of places to grab a bite to eat, and also many places to stay including hotels that look out across the harbour and sea beyond.

The hottest month to visit is in July, where the average high is 29C. On the other hand, the coldest month to visit is January, where the average high temperature is 8C. Flights from the UK to Trieste can be found as low as £31 per way, and Muggia is 20 miles from the airport. It takes either 25 minutes to drive to Muggia from the airport, or 45 minutes via public transport.
