The unnamed victim, 16, was enjoying an evening with her parents at a bar in Crete when she left to use the bathroom and was set upon by the man – a 28-year-old has now been arrested
A Pakistani man has been arrested after a 16-year-old British girl was raped in the toilets of a bar in Crete – just yards away from her parents.
The unnamed victim was holidaying on the Greek island and enjoying an evening with her parents at a bar in tourist hotspot Malia when she left them to use the bathroom. She was then allegedly followed by the vile attacker before her ordeal began.
The girl and her mother later visited a local police station to report the crime. Police had earlier checked CCTV, where they believed the attacker to be a 28-year-old man from Pakistan.
The man quickly fled the scene and a manhunt was launched to bring him to justice. But Malian police, using the CCTV footage from the bar, were able to track him down, Greek outlet Protothema reports. Police have since arrested and charged the man, who has not yet been named.
A spokesman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office earlier said: “We are supporting a British person following an incident in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.”
It comes just weeks after a British woman described being gang-raped while on holiday in Cyprus by five men after being “forcibly dragged” into a hotel room in the party resort of Ayia Napa. The tourist, aged 20 at the time of the alleged attack, was escorted under police protection into Famagusta criminal court in February as she prepared to give testimony behind closed doors.
It was the first time since identifying the suspects in a police line up last September the Brit came face-to-face with the men. A police officer said: “She is being incredibly brave. She went in with her head held high.”
A spokesman for the Civil Guard in Majorca said: “The Civil Guard in Calvia has arrested an Italian man aged 20 as the suspected author of a crime of sexual assault on a woman. The alleged victim and suspect coincided in a late-night bar in Palmanova.
“When the bar closed, the suspect allegedly took advantage of the woman’s state of disorientation because of the amount of alcohol she had drunk, to take her to the beach and rape her. Officers began an investigation and managed to identify and locate the alleged offender.”
