A mum has turned to the internet to ask parents how they would pronounce the name ‘Eieoie’ – and nobody can seem to agree on the correct way to say the unique moniker

Choosing the perfect name for your newborn can be a real head-scratcher for already stressed parents.

You want a name that embodies their identity – and and one they won’t shy away from as they grow up. It feels like a race against time to pick a unique and meaningful moniker soon after birth, especially one that won’t have them sharing names with half their class at school.

However, some parents might just push the envelope too far in their quest for uniqueness, as highlighted by a Mumsnet user who threw the name ‘Eieoie’ into the mix. It left many scratching their heads when she asked them how they would pronounce it.

In the comments, baffled parents attempted to decipher the pronunciation, with some suggesting it should be “screamed” or “yodelled”. One parent quipped: “I’d pronounce it like Eeyore.”

Another exasperated commenter exclaimed: “This name is trying too hard. There are no consonants, for f***’s sake. It sounds like a line from Old MacDonald.” Meanwhile, another joked:: “Ee Eye Oh Eye, if I didn’t have a chance to Google how to pronounce it first.”

A different Mumsnet user speculated that it could sound like “Ee-oh-ee. But perhaps it’s one of those Irish names whose pronunciation (to my English eye, anyway) bears no relation to how it’s spelt.”

“That would be a really difficult name to live with,” a concerned parent pointed out. Another said: “It sounds horrible to my ears,” while someone else chimed in: “Seriously, I am genuinely asking – is this a real name, or have you made one up? Either way, that kind of person is in for a lifetime of mispronunciation, confusion about spelling, and ridicule.”

Even though many aren’t sold on the name, it doe have quite a sweet meaning. The website ‘My First Name Rocks’ states: “The true meaning of ‘Eieoie’ cannot be described with just a few words. Your name is your destiny, heart’s desire, and personality. Eieoie is a name that indicates a gift of gab – the ability to persuade others effortlessly.

“You are expressive, optimistic, outgoing, and inspiring. Charming and cheerful, you are the life of the party for any social event. You fascinate others with your creativity, especially in writing. You have the innate ability to explain complex concepts in a way that is easy to understand.”
