Riots have begun to break out in the French capital after Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally were crushed in the election, according to an exit poll.
Videos emerging on social media show police rushing torwards flames as crowds of rioters throw projectiles in Paris.
Surprise polling projections in France say a leftist coalition that came together to try to keep the far right from power has won the most parliamentary seats in runoff elections. There was high voter turnout.
The BBC reports that the Place de la Republique is a scene of joyous celebration – and unconfirmed reports suggest any skirmishes are on the outskirts of Paris’s iconic square. Fireworks are going off in the square and people are climbing the statue of France’s beloved Marianne, which is the French Republic’s symbolic personification of liberty, equality and fraternity.
The projections are based on the actual vote count in select constituencies, and they put President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance in second and the far right in third. Final results are expected late Sunday or early Monday.
No one has a majority of parliament seats. The prime minister says he will turn in his resignation. The far right has drastically increased the number of seats it holds in parliament but fell far short of expectations.
Racism and antisemitism marred the campaign, along with Russian cybercampaigns, and more than 50 candidates reported being physically attacked.
