Paul Scholes believes Ruben Amorim isn’t telling truth in Man Utd post-match interviews

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim saw his side draw 2-2 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final at Lyon after two errors from goalkeeper Andre Onana

Manchester United icon Paul Scholes believes Ruben Amorim doesn’t think his Red Devils side is getting better despite his claims to the contrary. Amorim saw his side draw 2-2 in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night, with goalkeeper Andre Onana committing errors for both Lyon goals.

Onana, who had been criticised by Lyon’s Nemanja Matic before the game, allowed Thiago Almada’s free-kick to beat him for Lyon’s opener in the first half. Leny Yoro’s first goal for United levelled things up for the visitors, before Joshua Zirkzee looked to have won it with a header late on.

However, Onana spilled a shot into the path of Rayan Cherki to allow the Lyon attacker to level the scores in the 95th minute, ensuring Lyon have a result to cling to ahead of the Old Trafford second leg.

Amorim insisted that his side are getting better game by game after the result, but Scholes insists he doesn’t actually believe that to be the case.

“I don’t think he believes that,” said the former United midfielder to TNT Sports. “I don’t think he likes his team to be honest with you. I think he knows he hasn’t got a great football team. I think he wants better. I think he needs better.

“I think you can see that with the way he in on the touchline. He always looks disappointed to me. The way he’s speaking there tells me he’s disappointed with what he’s got and he needs better.”

Scholes also criticised Onana for his two errors, saying: “I think he was more so at fault for the first, a huge mistake, the second was a little harder but he has to do better than that.

“On the whole [it is] the right result. Lyon played the better football and created more opportunities, but [after] scoring so late United will be disappointed and they are in a good position at home, [so] they should still be big favourites but they will have to improve.”
