Manchester United have endured a wretched season, with Ruben Amorim winning just four Premier League games, and Paul Scholes believes they urgently need to sign new recruits

Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to sign five players or risk becoming embroiled in a relegation fight next season.

United have endured a wretched campaign and currently sit 13th in the Premier League. They are only 12 points outside the drop zone though, with Ruben Amorim struggling to get a tune out of the team since replacing Erik ten Hag.

Amorim has won just of the 13 top-flight games he has taken charge of, losing seven. United did boost their squad with the addition of fullback Patrick Dorgu in the January transfer window.

But Scholes believes they need to go much further in the summer when the window opens again. He has called on the Red Devils to sign a new keeper, two centre-backs, one central midfielder and a new centre forward, with Amorim’s struggles raising concerns.

“There are a few things that are concerning. There’s a lot of stuff he (Amorim) needs to do, we all know that, especially in transfer windows, but I don’t see a core of players,” Scholes told The Overlap Fan Debate.

“When you look at teams, you look right down the spine of a team. Liverpool : great goalkeeper, great centre half, forwards, midfielders, whatever. I don’t think United have any of that in any position.

“I think a new goalkeeper is needed, possibly two centre halves, two centre midfield players, and two centre forwards. Alright, I’ll go for one centre midfielders and one centre forward, but with a bit of stature, a bit of quality, and really create a spine.

“When you’ve got that spine right, then you can add bits to it. That spine, that core, is so important. If they don’t get that right this summer, this might sound ridiculous, but the form since this manager is in, they could be looking at relegation. I’m telling you, it’s been so bad.”

Centre forward has been a problem for some with neither Rasmus Hojlund, bought for £72million in 2022, or Joshua Zirkzee, bought for £36.5m last summer, proving up to scratch. Hojlund played in the win over Leicester last Friday, but appears to show frustration with Amorim, something the United boss played down.

“I think it’s a good thing. I will not say one word bad about this type of behaviour. He needs to understand that sometimes he has to do a job without touching the ball,” Amorim said after the game.

“He cannot get so frustrated because in the next play, maybe he will have a situation near the goal. So he has to be calm. But this is a character, and if you know so many players from that kind of character that he has from that country, they always want more.

“They want to score, they feel the critics. So, it’s a good thing, but he will improve. And a striker needs a very good team to deliver very good balls for him, and we are not helping our strikers at moment.”
