If you’ve ever completed a load of washing and then found yourself one sock short, you’re not the only one. A washing machine can be the main suspect for the disappearance

If you’ve ever found yourself one sock short after doing the laundry, you’re not alone.

It’s a puzzling and frustrating situation trying to figure out where the missing sock has gone. But it appears your washing machine could be the guilty party. As many of us have suspected when faced with this conundrum, machines do sometimes swallow up socks.

Thankfully, a TikTok user @d7customz has revealed they could be hiding in a secret compartment. In a video, a man is seen removing the side of a washing machine to look inside, and lo and behold, it was filled with socks.

One shocked viewer responded: “We owe our family an apology for blaming it on them. All the years joking about how ‘the dryer eats them’,” another commented. A third quipped: “Are my Tupperware lids in there too?” But there’s good news for those searching for their lost socks.

According to website Reviewed, it’s a common issue with different types of washing machines including front-loaders and top-loaders. Socks can get trapped in various components, and overloading the washer can also cause issues.

If you have a front-loader, you might be able to retrieve the socks by checking if there’s a clean-out area. Naturally, the washing machine isn’t the sole culprit for missing socks. It’s possible that your socks have disappeared elsewhere during the laundry process.

And by elsewhere, we mean your tumble dryer. When hunting for lost laundry, it’s worth giving your tumble dryer a thorough inspection too. Particularly, check the lint trap if it’s located at the front of your dryer, as this is a notorious hiding spot for stray socks, as per Reviewed.
