A makeup artist has revealed that many of us have been using setting sprays wrong when it comes to finishing off our looks – and the right way is a total game-changer

A makeup artist has revealed the correct way to use setting sprays – and the majority of us have been getting it wrong.

Championed by beauty influencers and TikTok stars, setting sprays fall into the same camp as fixing sprays and refreshing sprays. But do you know the right way to apply it? According to a woman on Reddit with over 20 years of cosmetic sciences and beauty industry experience, we’ve all been doing it incorrectly – and she’s on a mission to set us all straight.

“A lot of YouTube beauty gurus get it wrong (or explain it wrong) and it’s a little maddening and darn confusing,” the woman wrote in her post on the Makeup Addiction forum. “Once you get it, I swear, it’s a COMPLETE game changer!”

After applying an entire face of makeup, many people will reach for a setting spray in an attempt to hold the makeup in place. But that’s not its function, according to the expert.

“Setting Sprays have one major function they are supposed to fill and that is to mesh your makeup into one layer, not add to the wear length of your makeup,” they explained.

“When you spray a setting spray over makeup, everything you’ve applied should kind of merge into one, quick-drying liquid so it avoids slipping and separating. It does NOT offer any or very, very little fixative value or staying power. If your foundation tends to slip, then yes, you’ll see more staying power. Otherwise, it’s a merging and ‘de-powdering’ agent ONLY.”

Those looking to keep their makeup in place longer should instead reach for a fixing spray instead.

“A fixing spray has only one function also, that is to make your makeup last as long as possible,” they explained. “Applying a fixing spray over a setting spray will make your makeup last a lot longer. Applying a fix alone will make it last a little longer as you’re really only fixing the top layer it can penetrate.” Remember, a setting spray merges them all so fixing after setting LOCKS THAT MOTHER IN!!”

It comes after beauty expert Mayra Lopez shared her dos and don’ts when it comes to applying make-up – and the mistakes that will make us look older. The pro says that a number of people are making errors when it comes to applying eyeshadow, eyeliner, concealer, and contour to their faces – adding years onto their look.

Taking to her TikTok page, @the.mayra.lopez , Mayra said: “These little mistakes will make the biggest difference in your makeup game! I love helping women of all ages feel confident and beautiful in their own skin!”

She showed how on one side of her face she had used common makeup techniques, while on the other she used her own methods – which gave a much more youthful and elevated look. Mayra used the same products on each side but said “look at the difference”. See her five handy hints here .
