Beauty gurus couldn’t stop banging on about the common item for its spot-curing and moisturising effects. But it has to be used in a specific way for the most dramatic results

Skincare enthusiasts have heaped praise on a common household item which could keep spots away this winter.

The colder weather can wreak havoc on skin, leading to dry patches and breakouts but one beauty guru has lauded the positive effects a trusty tub of Vaseline can have when added to your skincare routine.

Franchesca Villar, beauty editor at Cosmetify, recommended ‘slugging’ which is a trend that’s been making waves in recent years. Often dubbed a miracle for spot-prone skin, the technique got its name thanks to the ‘slimy’ appearance it gives your skin.

Slugging is the process of applying a layer of Vaseline across your face as the final step in your beauty routine. It’s beneficial for the skin because it creates a protective barrier that locks in moisture, helping to keep skin hydrated.

Its affordable price tag is another bonus, especially when compared to other more expensive spot treatments, swanky serums and luxury moisturisers. A 50ml tub of original Vaseline starts at around £1.80 from most high street retailers.

Digital creator Hannah Cho racked up more than four million views on TikTok after sharing her successful results since trying slugging for herself. Addressing her vast following, she joked about waiting for Vaseline to sponsor her because she’s their “number one stan”.

Then, she turned her face to the camera and said: “Look at my skin right now – no beauty filter.” She referenced previous videos in which she had “acne all over [her] face” and continued: “One thing that really helped my skin barrier is just simple as, like, Vaseline – I apply this every night now.”

The influencer revealed it was her boyfriend that got her hooked on the budget-friendly wonder product. She initially rejected his recommendation to use Vaseline, believing it to be “so bad” for the skin, but after noticing he has “the most perfect skin ever”, she added it to her routine.

Her acne still made her wary of using the product, as it can clog pores, but while it “definitely didn’t cure [her] acne,” it did make her “skin barrier so strong and healthy”. Everyone reacts differently to skincare products so she advised trying a patch test first, before continuing to praise the dramatic results she’s seen from implementing it into her skincare routine.

She added: “I always slug my face with a really thin layer of Vaseline and I swear to God, it does its magic overnight. It’s kind of like using a sleeping mask because everything just settles into your skin and it just locks it all in.

“There’s no moisture being lost so it’s like glass skin for days. It’s like the one time I’ll listen to my boyfriend for skincare advice.”

Fellow TikTok users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts. One person said: “I scratched my breakouts with nails. I knew it [would] definitely leave a scar so I put vaseline every day for 3-4 days and it didn’t turn black and vanished within 3 days.”

Another said: “I put tiny layers of Vaseline on my under eye right before bed at night and it brighten my dark circles a lot,” while a third commented: “I have acne prone skin and some days my skin is just extra sensitive i mix a lil amount of Vaseline in my moisturiser and my skin loves it.”
