People have been using Samsung product since 1969 – but not many of them know the history behind the company – including how it got its household name

It has been around for 55 years – but people are only just learning what the company name Samsung actually means. Samsung, stylised as SΛMSUNG, is a multinational manufacturing conglomerate comprising of numerous affiliated businesses.

But most people recognise the South Korean brand for their smartphones, television sets, and other electronics including fridge freezers and even vacuum cleaners. However, some Samsung users have only started to question what the company’s name actually means – or whether it’s named after its founder.

  • ‘Entitled mum orders I wake her son up before school run – I taught her a lesson’
  • ‘I caught my mum sleeping with my husband – I can’t erase the image from my mind’
  • One Quora user asked: “Where does Samsung get its name from?” According to the company, its name is a reflection of founder Lee Byung-chull’s vision for the company – and translates to ‘three stars’ in Korean. A statement on their website reads: “What we began in 1969 has evolved and expanded through the decades.

“In Korean, the word ‘Samsung’ means “three stars” and the name carries the founder Lee Byung-chull’s vision for the company – to shine like stars in the sky, large, strong and eternally shining. The word ‘three’ represents large, plentiful, and strong while ‘star’ means bright, lofty and eternally shining. Since then, we’ve been marching on to a whole universe of possibilities.”

Expanding on this further, one Quora user claims: “Founder was very interested in Korean folklore. In Korean folklore and native philosophy, three is a very important number in many symbols. So he chose it. His first business was rice polishing. So, the name of the first store was Samsung sanghoe (‘store’) and business item was rice polishing.”

Another user added: “Samsung gets its name from the Korean words “sam” and “sung,” which together mean “three stars.” This name was chosen to represent the company’s big, powerful, and everlasting presence in the business world.”
