Philadelphia Union are mourning the loss of goalkeeper Holden Trent, who has died at the age of 25, with the tragic news confirmed in a statement on Saturday

Philadelphia Union’s goalkeeper Holden Trent has tragically passed away at the age of 25, the MLS club confirmed.

In a heartfelt statement on their website on Saturday, they announced the sad news but did not disclose the cause of death. “The Philadelphia Union is devastated by the heartbreaking passing of Holden Tren,” the statement read.

“While he was a wonderful player and fierce competitor, he was more importantly a devoted son, brother, fiancé, and teammate who made those around him better.

“He embodied the true meaning of determination, dedication, and perseverance, and he will be deeply missed. We extend our greatest sympathies to his family, his fiancé, and his friends.”

The club requested privacy for Trent’s loved ones during this difficult time and stated that no further comments would be made. MLS Commissioner Don Garber also paid tribute, saying: “Major League Soccer joins the Philadelphia Union and our entire soccer community in mourning the tragic passing of Union goalkeeper Holden Trent.”

“A young goalkeeper with a bright future, Trent showcased determination and professionalism every day as he contributed to the close-knit goalkeeping unit at Philadelphia.”

“We extend our deepest condolences to his fiancée, his family and friends, his teammates, and the entire Philadelphia Union community. MLS is coordinating with the club to provide players and family members with the resources and support they need during this tragic time.”

Trent’s family thanked his supporters for sending well wishes during this difficult time. “We want to thank everyone for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” a post on the keeper’s Instagram page read.

“Details on services and celebration of life are forthcoming. Our family is deeply touched to see and experience the love you all have for Holden.”

After being selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft, Trent logged two seasons with Philadelphia and appeared in six games for the team’s MLS Next Pro affiliate – Philadelphia Union II. The Greensboro, North Carolina native most recently took the field against New York Red Bulls II back in June, during which he recorded two saves and surrendered four goals.

Over five starts for Union II in league play during the 2023 campaign, Trent amassed 20 saves and registered a 62.5 save percentage while letting up 12 goals. Trent began his journey at West Virginia University before finding a home at High Point University, where he played for three seasons.

As team captain, he ended his college career ranked sixth among active NCAA Division I goalkeepers for shutouts (22) in the fewest games played (52). His efforts helped catapult the Panthers to their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory – a 2-0 triumph over UNC.
