The pizzeria in Dusseldorf, Germany, would include the drugs whenever punters ordered item number 40 from the menu with the amount charged for the special order currently unknown

A takeaway restaurant in Germany has been raided after one of its dishes was delivered with an illegal side order of cocaine.

The pizzeria in Dusseldorf, west Germany, would include the narcotic whenever customers ordered item number 40 from the menu. The amount charged for the special order is currently unknown. Criminal director Michael Graf said: “That was one of the best-selling pizzas.”

Food inspectors rumbled the operation in March and the drug squad put the restaurant under observation. At one point, they buzzed the restaurant manager’s apartment and he then chucked a bag out of the window, which felling into an officer’s arms, Dusseldorf police said.

On raiding the property, cops found 1.6kg of cocaine, 40g grams of cannabis and €268,000 (£223,480) in cash. Dusseldorf police seized the restaurant manager, 36, for a number of days, but he didn’t wait long to get the business back up and running with the popular number 40 order.

Police also got to work and looked into the supply chain. Within a few weeks, 150 officers were involved in a huge operation in which an entire drug ring was dismantled. Three people were arrested, including the head of the operation, who is just 22 years old.

The restaurant manager was arrested while trying to flee the country. The homes and businesses of another 12 suspects were also searched. In nearby Mönchengladbach and Solingen, raids uncovered two cannabis farms. One had 300 plants, while the other had 60.
