Rats become a significant nuisance in the summer, as the balmy weather encourages them to forage for food, leading to potential damage to lawns and flowerbeds. It’s crucial to ward off rat infestations, not only because they wreak havoc on plant life but also due to the health risks posed by their droppings, which can carry diseases like salmonella, contaminating the soil.
Using poison baits to deter rats is strongly discouraged; they are inhumane and pose a considerable risk to local wildlife and pets. Furthermore, they may prove futile as rats can develop resistance over time.

However, gardening expert Menhaz Uddin from Flower Fable has divulged that planting certain flowers or herbs can create a natural barrier that repels rats.
Menhaz explained: “Rats primarily seek food and shelter when venturing into new territories. Plants, in this ecosystem, play a significant role in influencing where they decide to set up shop.
“The power of plants goes beyond aesthetics and air purification. They can be silent defenders against pests like rats, turning your garden into a fortress without chemical interventions.”
Plants that will naturally keep rats away from your garden
1. Catnip
Menhaz remarked: “Nepetalactone, the essential oil in catnip, is the magic ingredient. While it sends cats into a state of euphoria, it acts as a deterrent for rats.”
Nepetalactone can significantly irritate rats, causing them to avoid areas containing this herb due to the discomfort it causes. Therefore, it’s advisable to plant catnip near plants you fear may be damaged by rodents.
2. Marigold
Menhaz stated: “These flowers release a scent that, while mild to humans, is abrasive to rats.”
These attractive plants are also known for producing chemical compounds that naturally repel many insects, including mosquitos, aphids, and whiteflies. Hence, they’re best planted near crops or cherished flowers to ward off numerous summer pests.
3. Elderberry
Menhaz explained: “Elderberry plants release a subtle aroma that is off-putting to rats. Plus, the texture of elder leaves is not to their liking.”
However, elderberries are toxic to rats but also to cats and dogs. Therefore, you should refrain from planting it if you have pets or reside in an urban area with neighbourhood cats or foxes nearby.
4. Lavender
Menhaz remarked: “The fragrant oils in lavender plants are overwhelming to rats. These creatures prefer environments where their sense of smell is unobstructed.”
The compounds in lavender interfere with the pheromones rats use to communicate, making it an incredibly effective repellent, reports the Express. It’s best planted near your garden’s boundaries for optimal protection.
5. Mint
Menhaz said: “Among the various species, peppermint and spearmint are the most potent rat repellents. Their strong aroma disrupts rats’ keen olfactory senses, discouraging them from lingering.”
It’s advisable to plant mint near compost bins, kitchen windows or any areas where rats might seek food, as it’s one of the most potent natural methods for deterring these pests.
